Topic: Small Town Schools in the Good Old Days
Dr. Brian M. Small - some of you may recognize the name - was the Superintendent of the Northern York County School District from 1995-2009. He will give a presentation, facilitate a discussion, and invite questions and input from the audience before hosting his book signing.
Dr. Small published his first book in 2013 titled All for One…and One for All. It was a history dedicated to the story of the one-room schools of what would become the Northern York County School District.
This current book, Small Town Schools in the Good Old Days, is the second half of that history covering what were originally one-room schools in the villages of Dillsburg, Franklintown and Wellsville,
all of which eventually were incorporated into boroughs. As the boroughs grew, so too did the need for larger multi-room town schools. By the early 1900s, Dillsburg and Wellsville added high school programs.
Small Town Schools in the Good Old Days includes the history of the school district up to consolidation and includes the one-room schools of Washington Township, which joined the Northern York County School District in 2017. While focusing on “Small Town Schools” it also discusses the one-room schools in the early history of the district, including those of Washington Township.
This event is free and open to the public so invite your friends and learn about local history from a new perspective.
