Topic: The Underground Railroad
Our Speaker Series continues on February 19th. In honor of Black History Month, Mr. Randolph Harris will speak on the Underground Railroad in York and Lancaster counties. He will focus on Route 15 as it was a main thoroughfare for those tryihng to get north. His presentation will include slides and will last 1.5 hours.
Mr Harris is the co-author of The Underground Railroad in Lancaster County, a teacher’s study guide. In 2016 he founded a company, Origins of the Underground Railroad, conducting walking tours and step-on guide services. He continues to conduct these tours with LancasterHistory. In 2010, Harris worked with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Office of Cultural and Heritage Tourism and Amtrak – the National Railroad Passenger Corporation -- to secure Underground Railroad Network to Freedom designation for the portion of the Amtrak railroad corridor between Lancaster and Philadelphia PA. This 70-milecorridor was used by the late 1830s to secretly transport formerly enslaved Africans in lumber carrying freight cars fitted with hidden compartments from Columbia, Lancaster County to Philadelphia.
